As an young engineer one of my first large projects was this! an Trommel that filters the input of a pistachio plant, although simplistic it is extremely efficient.

Raw Pistachio crop is harvested from a system that shakes the tree and the produce drops on into a bin that is then taken to be processed, this method is soft on the trees and thus have a low risk of harming the crop although not only does produce drop but also leaves, sticks and many other misc materials.

This trommel removes all the foreign materials from the shakers hall, it does this by having a large drum with specifically sized holes through out it that let the crop through but nothing else, it rotates slowly with slides which break apart any item sticking through the holes that hasn’t dropped into the hopper bellow.

Trommel Mk 2

Pistachio Trommel Mk 2

The Second Version of the Trommel!

The Trommel was good, but this Trommel is better,

we learnt from the first Trommel that airflow was required to move light product (leaves) from blocking the rotating perforated drum, with that information the first update was developed, this version takes what we learnt from it and kicks it up a notch.

The main differences are,

  1. Motor Placement.
  2. Completely Enclosed Drum.
  3. Adjustable Output.

This new system is fed by an elevator much like the previous version with airflow over the top of it supplied by duel fans.

The new system now feeds into a secondary chute, which allows the output angle to change which changes the whole systems flow rate.

Testing is on-going and so is improvement!

2023 Trommel Update

The 2023 Trommel Update

In 2022 the Trommel was first added to the standard processing of pre-hulled pistachios, there were some issues.

we made some changed for the 2023 Plant!

The Trommel has had some major changes include, side covers; that can be seen in the original product photo

The addition of fans which agitate the airflow through the drum. This lifts light material such as leaves which block the holes, further to this secondary sheets have been placed on the inside that allow for the adjustment of hole diameters.

  1. Hey, I just signed up on advice from your father. Met him here in California. This site is awesome. I work in tech in California. My son is about to enter college in mechanical engineering. I’d love for him to learn some ME. I can help with any web startup advice if you want.
